Continuous Improvement engages and empowers the people who do the work to discover better ways of working by solving problems and eliminating waste to maximize value for the customer as well as make life better for them.
Problem solving skills are developed using the PDCA process and tools, such as Fishbone Diagrams and 5 Why’s, to help people get to the Root Cause and implement countermeasures that will prevent reoccurrence. Employees are encouraged to identify and resolve problems within their sphere of control and participate in teams to tackle bigger problems. Deploying the PDCA process throughout the organization establishes a common language and approach facilitating the problem solving process.
Continuous Improvement is built on a foundation of Standardization and Stability which includes 5S, Standardized Work, Level Loading, Total Productive Maintenance, and Visual Management. Value Stream Mapping is used to see things from the Customer’s perspective and identify opportunities to improve quality by reducing errors at source, thereby reducing defects and rework, as well as to improve workflow by eliminating delays and work-in-progress. All of which improves safety, quality, delivery and cost performance for the organization.
People are the heart of Continuous Improvement. They need to see how the work they do fits into the entire organization and need to have the skills and be empowered to drive continuous improvement. Skill development is achieved through focused training, then “learn by doing”, by applying what they have learned in specific problem solving activities or kaizens for larger improvement initiatives.
